REVIEW:Jay Chou's Exclamation Mark (2011)

Hi all!
This is my first time writing a review so please excuse any flaws this post might have :)

Ok, so....I am a HUGE JAY CHOU FAN! I have followed him since high school (somehwere around Grade 9 or 10?) - ever since a good friend let me listen to 七里香 (Common Jasmine Orange). And if you also listen to Jay Chou like me, then you will know that Jay has a certain style which is very unique.

In Exclamation Mark, some of the elements of his style are there although this album is bit different in that Jay has decided to experiment with autotune and this, I think, is a bit disappointing as Jay's voice is very soothing and nice to listen to in its natural state.

So, in this album there are 11 tracks:

驚嘆號 (Exclamation Mark)

The first track is the title song, Exclamation Mark. This song has a very fast-paced, action feel to it, and somewhat reminds me of a video game ahaha. This song is also very reminiscent to some tracks in his earlier albums, namely 跨時代 (The Era), and 龍戰騎士(Dragon Rider). Do you guys think so too?



迷魂曲 (Enchanting Melody)
This song was alright. Fast-paced and pretty catchy. It's not a song I love, but not a song I hate either. Only thing to complain about is that there is too much autotune! And lol, there is an Inception re-enactment in the MV.



Mine Mine
This song would have been soooooo good without autotune!!! The background music was taken from 我不配 (I'm not worthy). However, I felt the lyrics were a bit simplistic and random....like, for example, "You say we've broken up, then why do I have to help you hold an umbrella?" Lmao, I felt the latter bit was a bit random...

Also, the MV was a bit weird - what was with the animal print clothing?? And the dancing style seemed Korean influenced, especially with the repetition of the English words "Mine Mine" (as some of you might know that Kpop normally consists of a couple of English words). But, I have to say, I really like the melody of this song - it really has that Jay Chou-style feel to it.



公主病 (Princess Syndrome)
The little girl at the beginning is sooo cute <3 This is also a fast-paced song, but it has that really happy feel to it, similar to 陽光宅男 (Sunshine Boy) and 麥芽糖 (Malt Candy). The song is not too bad, and I enjoy listening to it :)




你好嗎 (How are you?)
LOVE THIS SONG. Even though this is a typical classic Jay-style ballad, it still feels so good to listen to it. I guess you can never get sick of these type of Jay Chou songs (well, at least I don't get sick of them).



療傷燒肉粽 (Healing dumplings)
I also really like this song! Soooo catchy! It also has that "happy" effect :)
But the part just before the chorus sounds very similar to Lollipop's 哪里怕 (Where is fear?)



琴傷 (Piano sadness)
This song sounds soo much like 夜的第七章 (Twilight's seventh Chapter). It has that mystery/thriller feel to it. This song is alright, although I prefer Twilight's Seventh Chapter. Unfortunately, I would get bored if I listened to Piano Sadness repeatedly.



水手怕水 (The sailor who is afraid of water)
Ok, this song sounds way too much like 牛仔很忙(Cowboy is busy). Nevertheless, I find that it is really catchy regardless of its ridiculousness ahahaha - the beatboxing in the middle seems somewhat random but I think Jay pulled it off. You just have to listened to it a few times to have the song stuck in your head.

The MV is so cheesy, though LOL.



世界未末日 (It's not the end of the world yet)
This song sounds good! One of my favourite tracks from this album!



超跑女神 (The Goddess of Race)
Another one of my fav's from this album - another happy-feel song :) Love Jay's fast singing (ahaha so fast that it becomes even more indistinguishable than usual). Also really like how he incorporated the piano in the middle of the song.

But, as to the MV, I like the cars but not the ladies, although the face that Jay made at the end was hilarious.



皮影戲 (Shadow Puppetry)
This track doesn't have anything special, in my opinion. I don't know - it feels like something you listen to and you can easily forget.



OVERALL: The album was satisfactory. There were some songs that were good, while some were boring to listen to it, or had way too much autotune. I would buy this album only if it were decently priced (i.e. around US$15). I probably wouldn't fork out the extra for the DVD or other novelties that get included.
